From the page: "About one billion people " or one-sixth of the world's population " live in extreme poverty or on less than $1 per day. For these individuals, losing a crop to a drought or a crop-destroying insect invasion can be the difference between life and death. Farming innovations such as genetically modified crops can contribute to poverty alleviation by increasing yields, improving nutrition and generating income among resource-poor farmers. What we see is that with very practical approaches not only will the quality of life for the poorest of the poor be raised tremendously, not only will millions of people who otherwise will die be able to stay alive, but also, they will begin the process of economic development. [These investments will unlock the poverty trap and allow them to start moving forward, says Jeffrey D. Sachs a leading international economic advisor, who for more than 20 years has been involved in identifying challenges to and solutions for ending poverty. There's now promise in the case of many of the biotechnologies in agriculture of fortifying nutrients in places where the people are facing massive nutrient deficiencies " of course, traits that protect against local pests and pathogens, continues Sachs in an exclusive video interview and podcast available at the Conversations about Plant Biotechnology Web site: http://www.monsanto.com/biotech-gmo. Now there's the possibility of drought-resistant varieties. This would be a phenomenal breakthrough, especially for Africa, which is nearly a whole continent afflicted with the massive risk and reality of drought." A better choice for the hungry poor is some food and water than no food and water !

From the page: "NEW DELHI: Drinking water from taps at India's premier medical institute, AIIMS, could lead you to be admitted there or prolong your stay in the hospital. A recent evaluation of the drinking water available at AIIMS by the institute's laboratory medicine department found the samples contaminated with pathogens that cause typhoid and stomach ailments as well as hepatitis A and E. In a letter to institute director P Venugopal, the department expressed concern over the alarming situation and warned of a possible outbreak of typhoid or hepatitis on the AIIMS campus. The alarming facts came to light during a research project, funded by the Centre's department of biotechnology. As part of the study, water samples were collected from 10 different locations in AIIMS where purifiers had not been installed. "It was found that the overhead tanks were heavily contaminated with salmonella bacteria and giardia, among other microorganisms. But the most common pathogen was salmonella," said a senior doctor." Disgusting AIIMS is among India's best hospitals!

Tony Tan, chairman of Singapore's National Research Foundation, said the world was witnessing the biggest migration from urban to rural areas in human history, surpassing that in Europe and North America in the 18th century. "By the end of this year, for the first time in history, more than half of the world's population will reside in urban areas," he told hundreds of delegates to the conference, which ends Wednesday. "Most of the growth in urban areas has been and will be in developing countries, particularly in Asia," he added. By 2030, analysts project that towns and cities in the developing world will account for more than 80 percent of the world's population, he said. The shift was expected to strain transportation systems, housing and water supplies, and make it tougher to meet health and sanitation needs, Tan and other experts said. Tan cited the example of China, which today has more than 660 cities, up from 220 cities some 25 years ago.

From the page: "Utilities officials are urging customers to limit the use of water until further notice due to power outages at 17 pumping stations. The threat is of a sewer system overflows in the field. According to a press release, the most vulnerable areas are the beaches south of Indian Rocks Beach to Treasure Island and Indian Shores as well as the southern parts of Seminole. Customers are urged to limit water use and in particular flushing, showers and clothes washing until power is restored and the system is back on line. Utilities is bringing in nine portable generators which will be moved around as needed, however some of the stations are nearing overflow stage." Appeal please do more than your bit to save energy and water in USA my US friends - spread the message too and please help the government and municipal workers.

The UC Davis Western Cooling Efficiency Center is sponsoring the challenge, part of its push to improve the energy efficiency of cooling throughout the western states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming." The water flowing out of the plant directly into the Chesapeake Bay now has about 2.3 milligrams per liter of nitrogen, and 0.1 milligrams per liter of phosphorus - the two leading nutrients that pollute the bay and fuel the growth of harmful algae blooms. "That number may not mean a lot to you unless you're a scientist or an engineer," said Stephen Pattison, a state assistant secretary of environment. But rest assured, he said, those numbers mean good things for the health of the troubled bay. The new pollution levels are the lowest level achievable with modern technology, which is called "enhanced nutrient removal." Alan L. Quimby, the chief sanitary engineer for Queen Anne's County, led officials and reporters on a tour of the plant Monday afternoon. Water is growth and life itself - high time we be fair to water and improve its availability globally!

However, evacuation orders remained in place Saturday for the roughly 2,000 people who fled their homes Friday. Some evacuees spent the night at an emergency shelter set up at a local school. About 650 firefighters were working in hot, dry weather to contain the blaze, which destroyed as many as 15 buildings, including several homes, and closed scenic Highway 1 in Santa Cruz County for hours, fire officials said. The cause of the fire was still under investigation, Van Gerwen said. It was the third major blaze to hit Santa Cruz County in the past month. A 520-acre blaze charred destroyed 11 buildings in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and a fire near Corralitos covered more than 4,200 acres and destroyed about 100 buildings. To the south along the coast, firefighters worked against a nearly 80-square-mile fire in a remote part of the Los Padres National Forest in Monterey County. It was about half contained Saturday. In New Mexico, more than 700 firefighters battled blazes in the northern and southern parts of the state that have charred nearly 100 square miles, including more than 4,000 acres on a ranch owned by media mogul Ted Turner. Even the rich and famous are not spared the fury of nature-we all have to do a lot more for the environment to remain sane!
