The plants will cover 12.5 square miles of central California with solar panels, and in the middle of a sunny day will generate about 800 megawatts of power, roughly equal to the size of a large coal-burning power plant or a small nuclear plant. A megawatt is enough power to run a large Wal-Mart store.
The power will be sold to Pacific Gas & Electric, which is under a state mandate to get 20 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2010. The utility said that it expected the new plants, which will use photovoltaic technology to turn sunlight directly into electricity, to be competitive with other renewable energy sources, including wind turbines and solar thermal plants, which use the sun's heat to boil water.

My first experience last summer with cycling a century (100+ miles) was so inspirational and fun that I just couldn't quit...and so this year I joined the Silicon Valley chapter of Team in Training (TNT) to prepare for the High Sierra Century on September 10, 2005.
TNT is a very important part of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Since its inception in 1949, the Society has awarded more than $360 million in grants to some of the best and brightest researchers in the world. We believe that innovations in blood cancer research hold the keys to curing all cancers. Treatments such as chemotherapy and bone marrow transplantation, originally developed for leukemia, are now standard treatments for many cancers. In addition to research support, the Society offers support groups, financial aid, information and advocacy programs for patients and their families.

"If oil prices near $200, sending a shipping container from Shanghai to the U.S. East Coast would cost $15,000, up from $3,000 eight years ago."
Let us all try to reduce costs and become more efficient globally!

There are 3 1/2 million miles of rivers in the United States.
In Lisa Mauck Weiland's dreams, they could be the next great clean energy source for the world, but not the old-fashioned way, with dams and hydroelectric power plants.
Instead, Dr. Weiland, a mechanical engineering professor at the University of Pittsburgh, hopes to use tiny strips of plastic, undulating in the current of rivers and streams, to produce electricity.
An expert in "smart materials," Dr. Weiland and her team at Pitt are working on a project in which they hope to use plastics known as ionic polymers to help generate electricity for the town of Vandergrift in Westmoreland County, 25 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.
A truly great story-inspiring and really makes one appreciate polymers and material science and tech

President Bush offered federal help and encouragement Thursday to some of the 25,000 firefighters working under a blazing sun to contain wildfires that make up the single largest fire event ever recorded in California.
A lot more must be done to combat drought and wildfires-better reforestation, conservation of water and use of water is primary here !
