The plants will cover 12.5 square miles of central California with solar panels, and in the middle of a sunny day will generate about 800 megawatts of power, roughly equal to the size of a large coal-burning power plant or a small nuclear plant. A megawatt is enough power to run a large Wal-Mart store.
The power will be sold to Pacific Gas & Electric, which is under a state mandate to get 20 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2010. The utility said that it expected the new plants, which will use photovoltaic technology to turn sunlight directly into electricity, to be competitive with other renewable energy sources, including wind turbines and solar thermal plants, which use the sun's heat to boil water.

While some forecasts have viable solar energy projects drawing even on cost with dirtier fuel sources like coal by 2015, other people seem to think that's something of a pipe dream. Either through lack of trust in the efficiency of the free market, or skepticism about the pace of the economy, they've decided additional measures must be taken.
For fans of these legislative solutions, the U.S. state of Hawaii may soon be a new trendsetter, surpassing even the historically greener European Union. A bill currently before the Hawaiian state legislature would deny construction permits to any new homes that did not include plans for a solar water heater. Though some local European communities have enacted similar or more stringent requirements, Hawaii's legislation would be the first of its kind on such a large scale.
Hawaii - the way to go has been shown to all of us-people for all new constructions in India we too have compulsory rain water harvesting and solar water heating!

PRIME MINISTER Dr Manmohan Singh, presided over a meeting of the Energy Coordination Committee (ECC) of India to talk over the proposals about the progress of solar energy and other sources of renewable energy.
Manmohan Singh emphasised on the importance of developing renewable energy in India, keeping the rising crude oil prices and the gravity of climate change and global warming in mind. He authorised the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy to formulate schemes and regulations for the introduction of renewable energy certificates to encourage states to promote and trade in renewable energy. The ministry was also advised to come forward with a draft legislation for the promotion and accelerated growth of renewable energy sector.
Manmohan Singh said that the Centre will soon establish a solar energy mission and encourage the use of solar lamps in India. The members laid emphasis on the importance of replacing
kerosene lanterns with solar lamps both on account of India 's import dependence on crude oil, the high fiscal subsidy for kerosene and the environmental advantages of solar energy over kerosene.
Must be done !

One company, Konarka Technologies of Lowell, MA, recently announced that they had demonstrated the ability to manufacture solar cells by inkjet printing. The company's Power PlasticŪ solar cell technology -- which is the result of a project originally funded by the U.S. military -- uses a wider range of the light spectrum than conventional solar cells. All visible light sources -- not just sunlight -- can be used to generate power. It can be used virtually anywhere there is a light source and a battery.
Cool - now when will such companies start operations in India and other developing countries and at what costs - think it over.
