Oils spills have disastrous effects on the environment and the key to containing it, is by cleaning up the spill as quickly as possible. A designer, Ji-hoon Kim, claims that his OSP robot concept could actually contain an oil spill quickly by surround it with an inflatable barrier. The OSP unit would be rapidly transported to the accident site and be deployed from either a boat or helicopter. Once the spill is contained through multi-robot control algorithms, clean up crews can work on sucking all the crude oil out.

The Bubbling Ship is a concept devised by Yoshiaki Kodama, director of the Advanced Maritime Transport Technology Department at Japan's National Maritime Research Institute in Tokyo. The ship would blow bubbles from slits near the bow of the ship. The bubbles would travel along the hull, reduce friction, and hence increase gas mileage.
Is it feasible now? No, but that's what research grants are for. Ships are one of the largest consumers of diesel fuel in the world.

The company says that the sail, by their calculation, could cut fuel consumption by 10 to 35 percent on ocean voyages, depending on the conditions, the size of the ship, and other factors. More testing will be conducted this year. SkySails will double the size of the sails and attach them to larger, heavier ships. A big question will be how well the economics--buying a sail versus using diesel--work.
Other companies working on reducing emissions and fuel consumptions on ships include Solar Sailor, which has created sails with integrated solar panels. A ferry with the sails already prowls Sydney Harbor. San Francisco may get one in 2009.
Good news!

From the page: "The MS Beluga Skysails, a cargo vessel that uses a towing kite system to achieve better shipping fuel economy, completed its first shipment this week.
Global DHL Forwarding used the vessel to deliver 71 containers from Germany to Venezuela as part of a larger effort of creating a less-carbon intensive transport and logistics network. The ship's wind propulsion feature allows it to either travel faster or use up to 20 percent less fuel.
The maiden voyage was completed at a time when ship-related greenhouse gas emissions are under fire from several fronts. Earlier this week, a report commissioned by the U.N. International Maritime Organization surfaced, finding that ship-related emissions, at 3.5 percent of global carbon emissions, were grossly underestimated and nearly double than previous estimates of 1.4 percent.
Carbon emissions could rise another 30 percent by 2030 because of predicted increases in world seaborne trade, an industry responsible for shipping more than 90 percent of traded goods by volume, according to Reuters. "

From the page: "Shippers convening at the 97th annual meeting of the National Retail Federation (NRF) in New York last week were demanding that the NRF's Board of Directors do something government leaders here were failing to do: take action on the economy.
Retail drives the world!
â€oeU.S. retailers, who are a bellwether for our nationâ€s changing economic climate, are greatly concerned about the softening of the U.S. economy,” NRF President and CEO Tracy Mullin said. â€oe2007 holiday sales were the weakest since 2002, and as the New Year begins, consumer spending remains sluggish. Consumer spending represents 70 percent of the U.S. economy and has fueled our economy for the past decade. We agree with economists who say the fastest way for a stimulus to enter the economy is through the consumer.”"
