From the page: "More than $500,000 has been handed out to organisations in five US states to raise awareness about environmental health risks that can harm unborn babies. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded the grants to educate health care organisations and women in Ohio, Michigan, Oregon, Florida and Texas. EPA wants the funding to be used to focus on issues such as exposure to mercury, lead, environmental tobacco smoke, chemicals, pesticides, drinking water contaminants and air contaminants. Dona Deleon, acting director of EPA's Office of Children's Health Protection and Environmental Education, said: "We're giving pregnant women information on how to avoid exposure to certain environmental hazards to give children a healthy start to life. "These grants help the public health community reach women during this important time in their lives." __________________________________________________________________ About 3,000 health care providers and 10,000 women are expected to benefit from the grants. __________________________________________________________________ Funding will be used for projects such as training for healthcare providers and home visiting staff, and printing education material for the public and patients. The largest grant of $117,747 has been awarded to the Michigan Inter-Tribal Council, which will use the money to educate Native American women about environmental health risks. " This is good news for at least a few women !
Hundreds of Wildfires Burning 430,000 Acres in 11 States - thedailygreen.com

While the sheer number of fires is awe-inspiring, the number of large fires is a larger concern in many ways. So far in 2008, 35,820 large fires have burned 2.1 million acres, about 16% more than the average acreage to date. That larger acreage has been burned with 13% fewer fires, demonstrating the influence of the largest of the fires. Scary and it is mostly because of a lack of moisture in the environment itself - do more for conservation of forests, water and prevent fire through better planning and understanding !
Supreme Court to Hear Clean Water Case - If This Doesnt Violate Law What Does ? …

From the page: "Start with a pristine mountain lake in the Alaskan wilderness. Add toxic waste. Kill all the fish. Wipe the lake off the map. Bad for that lake, yes. But is it pollution? The seemingly obvious answer to that question (umm, yes?) is at the heart of a case the Supreme Court has agreed to hear this winter. In this corner, weighing in at 140,000 ounces of gold per year, is the Kensington mine, owned by Coeur Alaska (and the state of Alaska, which approved its plans to spoil the lake). And in the other corner, weighing in at 23 acres, Lower Slate Lake in the Tongass National Forest (with some help from Earthjustice, a group of lawyers that fights the power on behalf of environmental groups). The Kensington gold mine near Juneau has the Army Corps of Engineers and state permits it needs to dump its mining waste in the lake, according to the Anchorage Daily News, but the environmental groups â€" and the highest court to hear the case so far â€" have argued that doing so would violate the Clean Water Act. (Because â€" did I mention this? â€" it would kill all the fish and destroy the lake.) "Modern mines have never been allowed to dump tailings into lakes. The federal Clean Water Act prohibits it, and for good reason," said Tom Waldo, an Earthjustice attorney. "The Ninth Circuit's decision confirms a rule of law that has been in place for over 30 years, and we are hopeful that the Supreme Court will come to the same conclusion."" Sad if allowed!
