My first experience last summer with cycling a century (100+ miles) was so inspirational and fun that I just couldn't quit...and so this year I joined the Silicon Valley chapter of Team in Training (TNT) to prepare for the High Sierra Century on September 10, 2005. TNT is a very important part of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Since its inception in 1949, the Society has awarded more than $360 million in grants to some of the best and brightest researchers in the world. We believe that innovations in blood cancer research hold the keys to curing all cancers. Treatments such as chemotherapy and bone marrow transplantation, originally developed for leukemia, are now standard treatments for many cancers. In addition to research support, the Society offers support groups, financial aid, information and advocacy programs for patients and their families.

A student from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) has built a portable electrocardiogram (ECG) unit powered by solar energy. This system is intended for use in developing countries. The system has been named 'Kadiri' which means 'make possible' in the Tanzanian language Kiswahili. The idea for such a device came to the German student two years ago while he was visiting Tanzania. He worked for an hospital, fixed broken computers, and decided to develop a robust, affordable and energy-efficient ECG unit to be used in poor countries. Right now, he's focused on his exams, but he wants to found his own company to distribute the ECG unit after he gets his degree. Amazing work!

From the page: "The mounting U.S. drug price crisis can be contained and eventually reversed by separating drug discovery from drug marketing and by establishing a non-profit company to oversee funding for new medicines, according to two MIT experts on the pharmaceutical industry. Stan Finkelstein, M.D., senior research scientist in MIT's Engineering Systems Division, and Peter Temin, Elisha Gray II Professor of Economics, present their research and detail their proposal in their new book, "Reasonable Rx: Solving the Drug Price Crisis," published by Financial Times Press. Supercomputers fight against bird flu

A worldwide outbreak of avian or 'bird flu' is still not excluded and health officials recognize that new drugs are needed since new strains of the virus appear everyday. Now, U.S. scientists are using supercomputers to find new drugs to fight the virus and to stay ahead of these mutations. And it is encouraging to learn that a team of UC San Diego scientists has isolated more than two dozen promising and novel compounds from which new 'designer drugs' might be developed to combat this disease. The 27 new identified compounds appeared to be equal or stronger inhibitors than currently available anti-flu drugs like Tamiflu.

A 49-year-old woman collapsed and died on the floor of a waiting room at a Brooklyn psychiatric hospital and lay there for more than an hour as employees ignored her, according to the New York Civil Liberties Union, which on Tuesday released surveillance camera video of the incident. Disgusting - who even cared!

From the page: "The drug, called lodamin, was improved in one of the last experiments overseen by Dr. Judah Folkman, a cancer researcher who died in January. Folkman pioneered the idea of angiogenesis therapy -- starving tumors by preventing them from growing blood supplies. Lodamin is an angiogenesis inhibitor that Folkman's team has been working to perfect for 20 years. Writing in the journal Nature Biotechnology, his colleagues say they developed a formulation that works as a pill, without side-effects. They have licensed it to SynDevRx, Inc, a privately held Cambridge, Massachusetts biotechnology company that has recruited several prominent cancer experts to its board. Tests in mice showed it worked against a range of tumors, including breast cancer, neuroblastoma, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, brain tumors known as glioblastomas and uterine tumors." A very interesting development here!
