From the page: "Rising electricity costs are once again dominating the headlines. One way to lower these costs is to avoid the construction of expensive peaking power plants.
This analysis, undertaken by The Brattle Group, shows that demand response programs based on advanced metering and dynamic pricing could reduce peak load in the United States by at least 5 percent over the next few years.
If such a 5 percent reduction is achieved, Brattle estimates savings of approximately $3 billion per year in electricity costs. The discounted present value of these savings would be $35 billion over the next 20 years.

Prices for goods purchased by American businesses surged more than expected in July and have jumped by nearly 10 percent over the last year -- the sharpest increase since 1981.
High costs always hurt living standards globally-now is the time to reduce costs!

The plants will cover 12.5 square miles of central California with solar panels, and in the middle of a sunny day will generate about 800 megawatts of power, roughly equal to the size of a large coal-burning power plant or a small nuclear plant. A megawatt is enough power to run a large Wal-Mart store.
The power will be sold to Pacific Gas & Electric, which is under a state mandate to get 20 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2010. The utility said that it expected the new plants, which will use photovoltaic technology to turn sunlight directly into electricity, to be competitive with other renewable energy sources, including wind turbines and solar thermal plants, which use the sun's heat to boil water.

From the page: "After working on the internet for more than three decades, I'm more optimistic about its promise than ever. It has the potential to change unexpected parts of our lives: from surfboards that let you surf the web while you wait for the next wave to refrigerators that can email you suggested recipes based on the food you already have.
My colleagues at Nasa and I are even working on an interplanetary internet, which will make getting information to and from spacecraft in the far reaches of the solar system more reliable.
Closer to home, we're at the cusp of a truly global internet that will bring people closer together and democratise access to information. We are all free to innovate on the net every day and we should look forward to more people around the world enjoying that freedom.
I have met Dr Vinton Cerf-a great man!

My first experience last summer with cycling a century (100+ miles) was so inspirational and fun that I just couldn't quit...and so this year I joined the Silicon Valley chapter of Team in Training (TNT) to prepare for the High Sierra Century on September 10, 2005.
TNT is a very important part of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Since its inception in 1949, the Society has awarded more than $360 million in grants to some of the best and brightest researchers in the world. We believe that innovations in blood cancer research hold the keys to curing all cancers. Treatments such as chemotherapy and bone marrow transplantation, originally developed for leukemia, are now standard treatments for many cancers. In addition to research support, the Society offers support groups, financial aid, information and advocacy programs for patients and their families.

From the page: "Dubai, Aug 20 (IANS) Countries like India and China would face great problems in power production even as oil production remained adequate, according to Qatar's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister fo Energy and Industry Abdullah Bin Hamad Al Attiyah.
Al Attiyah told the Al Jazeera television channel Wednesday that demand for oil would continue and the world would face energy shortage, the official Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.
Countries like India and China would face a great problem in electricity production, even though oil production by oil producing countries would remain adequate.
The minister attributed the recent fall in world oil prices to speculations and said that the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) would intervene if oil supply exceeds demand in the markets.
He said that there were expectations that demand would shrink and that Opec would take appropriate measures in order to maintain the balance between supply and demand.
Oil prices had nearly double from around $70 a barrel in August last year to over $140 a barrel in June this year.
The prices are currently hovering around $115 a barrel mark." Smacks of greed !
